Wildlife in Farmington

When guests of The Casa Blanca Inn want a taste of wildlife, we recommend a visit to the Riverside Nature Center in Animas Park where a unique variety of birds and animals can be observed. From large windows overlooking a wetland where food and water attract wildlife, you will experience a close look at the plants and animals of the riverside and their historic role in local ecosystems. Whimsical Puppets in Imaginary Lands

The Casa Blanca Inn is perfectly situated to enjoy local Farmington events, like the Gateway to Imagination workshop featured at the Farmington Museum.

This two-day puppet-making workshop features projects built from paper mache, dowels, and fabric. Once finished, participants will have an opportunity to bring their puppets to life in the gallery and display them in a public art. Puppet making is featured on May 14th, from 6 PM to 8:30 PM, and May 15th from 10 AM to 12:30 PM. Children grades 1 through 5 are welcome to attend. Space is limited.

The Farmington Museum highlights the Four Corners region's settlement as a farming center, along with Anasazi history and Navajo culture. Canyon de Chelly National Monument

Located in the Four Corners region, the Casa Blanca Inn provides a central location to historic natural landscapes and national treasures. Canyon de Chelly is one of the longest continuously inhabited landscapes of North America. Containing archeological resources that span more than 4,000 years of human occupation, the monument encompasses approximately 84,000 acres of lands located entirely on the Navajo Nation with roughly 40 families residing within the park boundaries. When you visit, you will see distinctive architecture, artifacts, and rock imagery with great historical and spiritual significance. Canyon de Chelly is a unique national park, as it is comprised entirely of Navajo Tribal Trust Land that remains home to the canyon community. Exploring the Salmon Ruins

If visiting The Casa Blanca Inn, we recommend you take an afternoon to visit the Salmon Ruins nearby. Salmon Ruins is a site that hosts a Chacoan Anasazi great house built between approximately 1088 CE and 1100 CE. The complex contained 150 ground-level rooms arranged into a D-shaped configuration and up to 100 estimated second-floor rooms above them. Situated on the north bank of the San Juan River, the pueblo is located 45 miles north of Pueblo Bonito in Chaco Canyon.

The walls of the Salmon great house are constructed of thin sandstone slabs in the Chaco Canyon style with room blocks enclosing a large plaza containing a great kiva measuring 50 feet in diameter, similar to the one found at Aztec. There is also a "tower kiva", similar to the one at Chetro Ketl in Chaco, situated in the center of the main roomblock. The roof of the kiva was supported by four large columns built of alternating layers of stone and wood.

In addition to exploring these structures, on a visit to Salmon Ruins, you can see a 19th century homestead, picnic under a ramada, investigate replicas of a sweatlodge, hogan, tipi, or pithouse, see ancient artifacts and interesting "new" exhibits, conduct research in an extensive library specializing in the archaeology and history of the American Southwest, and browse a unique gift shop and archaeological reference materials.

Experiencing Little Known Treasures of The Bisti Badlands

Casa Blanca Inn is situated amongst some of the most popular and little known historical landmarks in New Mexico. Among them is The Bisti Badlands, a scenic and colorful expanse of undulating mounds and unusual eroded rocks covering 4,000 acres.

Hidden away in the high desert that covers the distant northwest corner of New Mexico, The Bisti Badlands are part of the Bisti Wilderness Area. The typical route to access The Bisti Badlands is along NM 371 from Farmington, heading due south through wide open prairie land at the east edge of the great Navajo Indian Reservation, which extends for 200 miles into Arizona.

Infamous Stringdusters return to Durango

Casa Blanca Inn guests will be excited to know that the Stringdusters are returning to Durango on Thursday, March 25th at 7:30 pm. Known for their bluegrass style, members of the band offer a broad melting pot of American music with training in classical, jazz, hard rock, and country. Based in Nashville, Tenn., the band consists of six unique, professional players who are steeped in the tradition of bluegrass vocal harmony as well as the progressive edge of instrumental music.
